Colin Doherty is a consultant neurologist and Honorary Senior lecturer in neurology at St James's Hospital in Dublin. He was trained in the partners neurology residency programme at Harvard Medical School, Boston and subsequently completed Fellowships in Epilepsy and Cognition. He has published widely the areas of brain imaging in epilepsy, the genetics of epilepsy, functional imaging of language and clinical epileptology and neurology. In the last few years he has become interested in the challenges of population health, health services research and care delivery in epilepsy. He was a member of the Irish government’s ‘expert group on resource allocation in the health sector’ which produced it’s report in the summer of 2010. He is a member of the national clinical effectiveness committee in Ireland and is a board member of the main government funding body for clinical research in Ireland, the Health Research Board. He is the Irish representative to the international League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) committee for the Global Campaign Against Epilepsy. Recently, he has been appointed National Clinical Lead for the Epilepsy Care Programme in Ireland, with a charge to develop epilepsy services nationally to improve quality of care, access for patients and value.
